What causes lower back pain?
Lower back pain is caused by injury to a muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain). Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, a fracture, a ruptured/bulging disc or arthritis. Other causes may be due to pregnancy, and incompatible mattress for you. Pain can be short-term and intense (acute) or it can draw out for months to years depending on the cause.
There are two main types of lower back pain:
- Mechanical pain. By far the most common cause of lower back pain, mechanical pain is primarily from the muscles, ligaments, joints (facet joints, sacroiliac joints), or bones in and around the spine. It is usually impacted by excessive pressure on the spine and may feel different based on the activity at the time
- Radicular pain. This type of pain can occur if a spinal nerve becomes impinged or inflamed. Radicular pain may follow a nerve or run down towards the glute and/or leg. Its specific sensation is sharp, electric, burning-type pain and can be associated with numbness or weakness. Typically this is known as Sciatica.
A physiotherapist can help you alleviate pain, and give guidance on how to manage and prevent lower back pain from getting worse.
