What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that occurs when flexible tissue at the ends of bones wears down.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), osteoarthritis is the predominant condition leading to knee and hip replacement surgery in Australia.

Once someone gets osteoarthritis, it cannot be reversed. However, there are many ways to help manage symptoms and keep mobile, such as:

🌱 resting and sleeping well for body repair

🌱 managing weight to reduce stress on joints

🌱 using assistive technology (such as a walking stick) to reduce pain and assist with balance

🌱 remaining active via strengthening exercises for increased muscle strength, and range of motion exercises to improve flexibility

🌱 engaging in manual therapy to relieve muscle tightness

It is essential to know what osteoarthritis is and how you can help you or a loved one.
