What causes upper back pain?
Upper back pain occurs in the cervical spine typically in between the shoulder blades and above. The upper back is usually the most resistant to injury and pain. Symptoms usually caused by injury to a muscle (strain), ligament (sprain), dull pain, burning sensation, muscle tightness and stiffness, or a sharp and stabbing pain. Sometimes, symptoms can radiate to the chest as well. Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, overuse, collision and accidents. Other causes may be due to pregnancy and coughing. Pain can be short-term and intense (acute) or it can draw out for months to years depending on the cause.
A physiotherapist can help you alleviate pain, and give guidance on how to manage and prevent upper back pain from getting worse.
